Immanuel Lutheran Students Celebrate Thanksgiving Old School Style By Giving to FISH Food Pantry

Peter Weldon

Amid all the hype of Black Friday, students at Immanuel Lutheran School in East Dundee ramped up to Thanksgiving in an old school way - by giving.  The seventh and eighth graders on Immanuel’s Student Council challenged the student body to collect 1,000 items to share with the FISH Food Pantry in Carpentersville.  Within 5 days, they not only met their goal, but exceeded it by collecting over 1,300 items to donate.

The school’s collection boxes and stage were filled to overflowing as the sorting and transporting operation began under the direction of Student Council Advisor Mrs. Christina Navarro.  “The kids did a great job meeting the goal this year.  This year’s Student Council students are working together so well to make their projects so successful.  Just a few weeks ago they raised money for Shop with a Cop and now this big project.  They are doing a great job leading our school in service!” Navarro said.

Immanuel’s connection with FISH continues year-round and includes the church’s 5K Family run, Go FISH, held annually in August.  All proceeds, including race fees, food and toiletry donations, go directly to FISH.  Sarah Schiltz, the church member who founded the annual event, reports that each year, more people participate and become supporters of FISH Food Pantry.  School Principal Sue Domeier loves the event and the recipient.  “The Go FISH 5K is such a great family-friendly event that highlights not only physical wellness and community, but also our responsibility as Christians to help our neighbors.  What a joy to be part of it, coming together to do something good for our bodies and by raising money for FISH, doing something good for others.”
